Dr. Strasser was in Niagara again!

September 26., 27., 28.2003 ,  this pioneer brought her vast practical experience as a veterinarian and hoof care specialist to our region for a third year.  We had participants from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, California and Hawaii here during the last 3 years.  Please phone us to get more information.

"Just to bring you up to date on Sierra, the grey mare I had at the clinic 2 years ago. Her feet look amazing, not even any founder rings. She cortos (our Paso Fino speed for trot) and canters both in the arena and outside on the snow and never a gimpy step. To look at her ,without x rays, you would not even know she had foundered. I haven't had recent x rays done but I might get some done in the spring just to see if she is back to normal.(Of course my vet says don't waste your money, they never go back to normal). Anyone who knows what she has gone through are just astounded that this is the same horse. All thanks to Dr. Strasser and her methods!!    G.N.
note:  this mare had to be suspended in a sling during the 2001 clinic, to be able to stay upright for working on her feet.

A Lifetime of Soundness

Dr.vet.med.Hiltrud Strasser*1
The key to optimal horse health, lameness rehabilitation and the high-performance barefoot horse

Most of the common health problems and lamenesses afflicting domestic horses are a direct result of man-made violations of their natural lifestyle and can be prevented or cured through a removal of the cause and a return to a natural lifestyle.
Strasser Lifetime of Soundness
Shoeing: A Necessary Evil ?

Dr.vet.med.Hiltrud Strasser*1
Facts every horseowner should know about shoeing

"...it is clear, from the readiness with which people consent to have their horses shod at any age, on the first summons of the breaker-in of the horse, that they view the shoe merely as protecting the foot, and are not aware of it's insidious effects; ...but would rather, as we often observe, treat the proposition of it's removal as a piece of inhumanity."

the Demonstration of a Pernicious Defect in the Principle of the Common Shoe, 1829

Who's Afraid of Founder

Laminitis Demystified: Causes, Prevention and Holistic Rehabilitation by Dr. med. vet. Hiltrud Strasser, PhD
This newest book by Dr. Strasser details the causes of laminitis, its prevention, and the means of healing this conventionally considered incurable problem in a permanent manner.
This book features many excellent photos, with some in full color. It expands upon the laminitis/founder information presented in her previous books, and offers clear, logical explanations about this dreaded disease. This book is a must-read for all horseowners, especially those dealing with laminitic or chronically foundered horses. 138 pages, incl. color images

The Centaur Reborn

By Peter Speckmaier and Sabine Kells
The Centaur Reborn gives insight into how to establish optimal horse health, horsemanship, and top equine performance. In addition to a brief review on correct lifestyle and hoof care, it covers areas such as tack fit and horse nutrition, psychology, anatomy and physiology, especially as these relate to training, riding, and rehabilitation. Peter Speckmaier, one of the authors and the world's first Certified Strasser Hoofcare Specialist, is also a Chiron Jumping instructor; in this book he showns how basic Chiron jumping training can establish a horse's willing cooperation without force. Chiron-trained horses are often jumped without reins or headstalls, over obstacles such as ropes or streams of water shooting out of a garden hose. This book concludes with a brief history of Caprilli, the man who revolutionized jumping in the late 1800s.
"This book was written for everyone who has ever watched an equine performance and stood in awe, wondering how to even begin to achieve such harmony. It is for those who wish to give to their old familiar mounts whose health may be failing a new lease on life and vitality. It is for those who are frustrated by apparently inexplicable problems in their horses, from back pain to head tossing to vices that just won't go away. It is for those who want to achieve optimal perfomance in their chosen discipline, or who just want as healthy and willing and 'rideable' a horse as they can have." 172 pages.

Metal in the Mouth

the Abusive Effects of Bitted Bridles
by W. Robert Cook, FRCVS, PhD & Dr. med. vet. Hiltrud Strasser, PhD

A must-read for every horse owner who uses a bit. 144 pages, incl. color images.

Old Mac’s and Old Mac's Generation 2 Differences

    • The G2 has a new tread pattern that provides aggressive traction while eliminating pressure on sensitive internal hoof structures. While traction is extremely important, very aggressive traction can inhibit a horse’s natural way of going, and can increase stress on joints, tendons and upper extremities.
    • Another enhancement of the sole is the removal of the point at the toe. The G2 tread is rounded for a natural breakover, softening the miles and miles of riding you’ll do in your boots.
    • For horses whose hooves were too narrow to fit into the Old Mac’s there is good news! The shape of the sole on the G2 is different that the original. The new shape is slightly longer than wide, and will fit a greater percentage of horse’s feet. This is an important feature that will allow more horses to wear the boots comfortably and without inserts.
    • Along with the new shapes comes new sizing. You will have to carefully measure and review the new charts in order to fit your new boots.
    • By integrating the side flaps into the sole and adding a front protective shield, Old Mac’s has made the G2 more stylish and streamlined. The side flap integration narrows the boot, and reduces the amount of bulk over the foot,
    • The new Front Protective Shield prevents wear at the front of the boot.
    • The rear of the boot is now integrated into the sole. This design change strengthens the rear of the boot and eliminates the possibility of fitting the boot on a hoof that is too long. In addition the rivets have been removed which could cause irritation to the frog area

  •  Old Mac's G2 Multi-Purpose Horse Boots Sizing

Before you begin taking hoof measurements, please ensure your horse has a fresh and accurate trim.

Simply follow the steps below to select the correct size. Feel free to contact us for assistance. Sizing is imperative to a good fit. We cannot exchange used boots.

Old Mac’s G2 are available in 11 sizes (0-10) with each size increasing by 5mm (3/16 inch) in width and length. It is important to note Old Mac’s G2 sizes are in no way comparable to metal shoes sizes.

The unique design feature of Old Mac’s G2 allows for width and length adjustment and is therefore suitable for both wide and narrow hooves. Old Mac’s G2 sizing allows for natural hoof growth between trimming. If your horse’s hooves are excessively long and narrow, Old Mac’s Inserts are available separately.

Immediately after a proper trim measure your horse’s hooves. If you intend to use Old Mac’s G2's over metal shoes for transportation then you must take your measurements AFTER shoeing. Correct size selection and proper fitting is very important and will ensure maximum performance from Old Mac’s G2 Multi-purpose Horse Boots™.

    Important Size Notes

If your horse is between sizes, go to the larger size.

It is common for the LENGTH measurement to exceed the WIDTH measurement by up to four sizes. If the width measurement exceeds the length by more than one size (an extremely short and wide foot) OR if the length exceeds the width by more than four sizes (a very long and narrow foot), we do not recommend Old Mac's.

Old Mac’s Inserts should ONLY be used:

    • If the length exceeds the width by more than four sizes on the size chart

    • For a club foot

    • If one hoof is distinctly smaller than the other

How to get the correct size boot for your horse:

Trim Hoof - Before measuring, ensure your horse’s hooves have been correctly trimmed with all flare and excessive length removed. We also recommend that the edge of the hoof wall, where it meets the ground, be beveled (rolled) with a rasp. This removes the sharp edge of the hoof wall and prevents chipping and white line separation.

Select Size - Accurately measure the length and width of your horse’s hoof at the widest point. From the charts below, select the size that matches the measurement.
